Why Artists Have Painted the Devil for 1,500 Years
Every time humanity painted the Devil, it was painting a mirror, and the face in that mirror kept changing. From an almost angelic blue mosaic in Ravenna, to Bosch's hollow-stomached monster, to Blake's beautiful and defiant Satan, the Devil in art was never really about evil.
